Test Results
We flew/tested the Power Sled 1.0 a perfect 12 MPH steady sea breeze. In this wind range the kite went up easily and flew steady. The kite also flew very steady in light and moderate winds of 6 to 15 MPH. The tag description states the wind range to be 6 to 24 MPH. We estimate the recommended/realistic and safe wind range to be about 6 to 18 MPH.
Kite Contents: Power Sled 1.0 kite, Pull String Kite bag, tag description, Instructions and 100 lb x 200ft twisted nylon on a 6 inch dia. spool. Recommend upgrade to braided dacron 100 lb x 500 ft.
The dimensions of the kite are 51 inches wide x 30 inches high.
The kite requires no modifications to the bridle. It is a fixed bridle. Assembly is not required. Attach your flying line to the heavy duty bridle. This kite requires 100 pound braided poly test flying line (provided line is not adequate). Note: Initial assembly requires you to undo the factory-tied daisy-chained bridle. The bridle was daisy-chained and requires removing the ribbon and pull the line to it's full length. There are several spars in the 1.0 and 1.7 model. The spars are inclosed and need not be inserted or removed for storage unlike all the larger models that do require six 2 pcs spars to be inserted into the sleeve with split nock and bungee cord. Early models of the HQ sleds did not have tow loops for attaching tails or a drogue, HQ has has now added the tow loops on all models as of 2010.
The sail is made of ripstop nylon with typical HQ quality stitching to achieve the kite design. The sail and 3 keels are hemmed for durability. There is a 1 inch Dacron edge binding around the 6 cells for additional reinforcement which also improves stability in flight. Each of the six cells contain a light weight extremely flexible fiberglass spar inclosed to maintain the shape of the cell and improve the flight and stability (care should be taken not to bent these spars to a breaking point during storage).
The large sail area of this kite lends itself best for visual appeal at a height of at least 300 feet or more.
This kite provides very moderate lift/pull and thus is suitable for attaching medium sized windsocks and other similar laundry to the flying line (pending wind conditions). There are also 2 tow loops for tail attachments on the sail.
It is a safe kite to fly for entry level adult kite fliers (in the recommended wind range) since there are six flexible fiberglass rods which form the frame. Moderate tie down system may be use.
Summary: At a price of $59.89, the Power Sled 1.0 is an excellent value for entry level adult kite fliers. If you need more lift/pull than the Power Sled 1.0 then try the Power Sled 1.7 or 3.0. Sleds are one of the most stable kite designs and we highly recommend this kite.
