Test Results
We flew/tested the NewTech 35 foot rainbow dragon kite in a wind range from about 6 to 13 MPH. At the lower wind range the kite flew mostly steady. At the higher wind range the head of the kite bends significantly causing the tail to fold in half vertically (refer to the photos), causing the kite to become unstable, and the kite to lean and eventually nose diving into the ground. The wind range is documented in the enclosed instructions as 5 to 25 MPH. We estimate the recommended/realistic and safe wind range to be about 6 to 10 MPH due to the thin fiberglass rods in the head and spine. FYI: Around 18 MPH sand starts to move/blow across the beach where we test our kites.
Kite Contents: 35 foot dragon kite, three hundred feet of 30 pound test line on a plastic hand winder, clear vinyl storage bag.
The dimensions of the kite are 21 inches wide x 420 inches high.
The kite requires no modifications to the bridle. There is no assembly. Just attach the flying line to the bridle.
The sail (head) is made of appliqued ripstop nylon. The head is hemmed for durability. We liked that there were metal eyelets near the top and bottom of the head for the bridle to pass through to connect to the spine.
The moderate sail area of this kite lends itself best for visual appeal at a height up to about 150 feet. The rainbow design is colorful in the sky.
Summary: At a club member price of $18.89, the NewTech 35 foot dragon kite is a fair value for children and adults due to its limited wind range and poor flying characteristics in higher wind speeds. Stonger fiberglass rods in the head and spine are recommended/needed. It is easy to fly and requires no assembly.
The 35 foot dragon comes in different designs:
rainbow, sunshine, wildfire, zig zag
