Test Results
We flew/tested the NewTech Opie kite in a wind range from about 6 to 12 MPH. In this wind range the kite flew mostly steady. At the higher wind range the head of the kite starts to bend and the kite starts to lean. The wind range is not documented in the enclosed instructions. We estimate the recommended/realistic and safe wind range to be about 6 to 13 MPH due to the thin fiberglass rods in the head and spine. FYI: Around 18 MPH sand starts to move/blow across the beach where we test our kites.
Kite Contents: Opie dragon kite, three hundred feet of 30 pound test line on a plastic hand winder, clear vinyl storage bag.
The dimensions of the kite are 20 inches wide x 91 inches high.
The kite requires no modifications to the bridle. There is no assembly. Just attach the flying line to the bridle.
The sail (head) and tails (6 foot tentacles) are made of silk-screened ripstop nylon. The head is hemmed for durability. We liked that there were metal eyelets near the top and bottom of the head for the bridle to pass through to connect to the spine.
The small sail area of this kite lends itself best for visual appeal at a height up to about 75 feet. The Opie is colorful in the sky.
Summary: At a club member price of $12.89, the NewTech Opie kite is a good value and flyer for children. It is easy to fly and requires no assembly.
The Opie comes in different colors:
green, orange, pink and red
