Test Results
We first flew/tested the NewTech 38 inch Sunshine Diamond kite in a wind range from about 6 to 13 MPH. NOTE: The tow/attachment point on the bridle is in the wrong place. We needed to attach an alternate pig-tail (attachment point) about 2 inches above the factory setting to get this kite to fly well at a high angle. In this wind range the kite flew mostly steady
with the kite line attached to the alternate attachment point.
We estimate the recommended/realistic and safe wind range to be about 6 to 13 MPH. FYI: Around 18 MPH sand starts to move/blow across the beach where we test our kites.
Kite Contents: 38 inch Diamond kite, three hundred feet of 30 pound test line on a plastic hand winder, vinyl storage bag.
The dimensions of the kite are 42 inches wide x 38 inches high.
The kite requires modifications to the bridle. See NOTE
above. It is a fixed bridle. Assembly is quick and easy, insert the 2 fiberglass cross-struts into the corners
of the backside dacron pockets and center molding.
NOTE: The cross spars were uneven when inserted into the side pockets, one spar bowed in the back or vice-versa. The instructions are clear using both text and diagrams.
The sail is made of appliqued and silk-screened ripstop nylon. We were pleased with the stitching and applique for a kite in this price range. The kite is hemmed for durability. The struts have rubber end caps to prevent them from protruding through the pockets over time and causing splinters in your fingers.
The small sail area of this kite lends itself best for visual appeal at a height up to about 100 feet. The Sunshine design is colorful in the sky. It also includes 2 ribbon tails which helps improve the stability of the kite somewhat.
Summary: The NewTech 38 inch Diamond kite is a fair value for children when using the alternate attachment point setting. We were unable to fix the uneven cross spar problem.
The 38 inch Diamond comes in many designs:
Butterfly, Sunshine, Saturn, Jolly Roger, Fiery Dragon,
Dinosaur
