Test Results

The Sopwith Camel is part of NewTech's Historic Aviation Series of plane kites. We flew/tested the Sopwith Camel kite in wind ranges of about 7 to 14 MPH.  In this range the kite flew fairly steady with some sensitivity to wind changes. We estimate the recommended/realistic and safe wind range to be about 7 to 15 MPH.  FYI: Around 18 MPH sand starts to move/blow across the beach where we test our kites.

Kite Contents: Sopwith Camel kite, 30 pound test line on a plastic hand winder, instructions, vinyl storage bag.

The dimensions of the kite are 41 inches wide x 42 inches high.

The kite requires no modifications to the bridle.  It is a fixed bridle.  Assembling the double winged plane kite for the first time will take about 10 minutes (having two people helps, one being an adult).  There are 7 fiberglass struts/rods which form the frame of the kite.  During initial assembly it is not completely clear exactly where each strut belongs.  Once you get it right the first time, subsequent assembly is easier and somewhat faster. The instructions are relatively clear to understand using both text and a diagrams.  Consider keeping the kite assembled if you have the storage space in your home or car trunk.

We liked the rotating propeller on the front and spinning tail on the rear of the kite. This creates a realistic motion/flying effect.  The 3-dimensional plane shape also adds to the appeal.

Note: Make sure you do not loose the small rubber end cap which secures the propeller. You may want to consider glueing it permanently to the nose of the plane.

The sail is made of appliqued and silk-screened ripstop nylon. The wings are hemmed for durability.

The small size of this kite lends itself best for visual appeal at a height of about 100 feet or less.

Summary: At a club member price of $17.89, the NewTech Sopwith Camel kite is a good value for children and adults who want something different than a delta, diamond or sled kite.
